Bas van Berkel: President & CEO
Bas is a serial entrepreneur, specialized in developing projects with environmental impact. He has successfully formed, ran, and sold several businesses, both in Europe and North America. In his over 20-year career, he has been involved in several industries ranging from construction, urban development, water and algae technologies, plastic recycling, closed loop farming, infrastructure investment, and energy production. As well, he has been retained as expert developer in the field of landfill and biogas projects.
Currently Bas spends most of his time developing Renewable Natural Gas Projects He has developed BerQ’s first RNG project from initiation, signing supply and off take, and securing financing. As well, Bas was a founder of StormFisher Biogas and served as its President & CEO while building the company
Bas also acts as guest lecturer, business plan competition judge, and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the Richard Ivey School of Business. He graduated with an MSc. Civil Engineering from Delft University, The Netherlands, a post-graduate degree “infra-development” from University of Groningen, The Netherlands, an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business, London, Canada and has enrolled in clean-tech executive education at Haas-Berkeley, California, USA.
Stephen Pogorski, PhD, PEng., PMP: Director of Development
Stephen is a recognized expert in natural gas and alternative energy with over 25 years of experience leading the design of innovative energy projects and managing pipeline integrity risk.
Prior to joining BerQ he held managerial roles at Enbridge Gas Distribution; built a team at ENN Canada to oversee the design, construction and operation of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG); and at Jenmar Concepts he was responsible to develop business in Eastern Canada and provide engineering solutions for natural gas and alternative energy projects.
Stephen is a professional engineer that holds bachelor and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering and Applied Science from the University of Toronto. He also has a PMP designation as a project management professional.
Stephen has held several leadership positions for the development of liquefied natural gas codes and standards on the Canadian Standards Association CSA Z276 and CSA B108 committees.
John Nicholson M.Sc., P.Eng.: Director of Business Development
John has over 25 years of experience in environmental consulting, environmental law, and government.
He was recently the President of Environmental Business Consultants, a firm that specializes in investing in new cleantech and environmental companies and assists in their growth through various means including financing, business development and operations, marketing and sales, and technical assistance.
John was the President and COO (past CEO) of the cleantech start-up company CHAR Technologies Inc. , which specializes in the capture and removal of hydrogen sulfide from renewable natural gas. John’s involvement with CHAR started in the fall in 2013 when it was a one-person operation and he helped grow the company to the point where it is a publicly traded company on the TSXV (YES) and has a capital worth of over $9 million. In 2016, CHAR Technologies Inc. was named to the CIX List of Most Innovative Companies.
John has been the editor of Hazmat Management Magazine (hazmatmag.com) since early 2016, having served as the business and technology columnist for the previous 12 years. John is also editor of Advanced Waste Solutions Magazine (advancedwastesolutions.ca). He is the former business and technical columnist for Solid Waste & Recycling Magazine and former editor of Water Canada magazine.
John has taught courses at Ryerson University and Sheridan College including industrial wastewater treatment, environmental auditing, and waste management.
John’s early work career included five years at Acres International Ltd. (which has subsequently merged with Hatch), seven years at Torys LLP in Toronto, and three years at the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Zooshare Biogas Cooperative from 2011 to 2015.
John has a M.Sc.(Eng.) from the University of Guelph and is a registered professional engineer in the Province of Ontario.
Steve Suske: Chair
Steve Suske is a proven entrepreneur with over 40 years of professional experience in developing and managing businesses. He has overseen, led and advised over $5 billion in business transactions across a variety of sectors.
Steve is the founder of Chartwell Retirement Residences (TSX: CSH.UN), as well as Regal Lifestyle Communities Inc. which was privatized by Revera Inc. and Welltower Inc. (formerly known as Health Care REIT, Inc.) on October 26, 2015. He also founded Spectrum Seniors Housing Development Corporation.
He is currently President and CEO of Suske Capital Inc., Chair of Polski Solar S.A., MTCO Holdings Inc., Points West Living Limited Partnership, Canoe Bay Development Inc., Chancery Seniors Housing Investments Inc., Help for Mom, High-Rise Senior Services, and 103 Street Developments. He is also a Director of theExecutionOffice Inc.
Steve graduated from the MBA program at the Richard Ivey School of Business in 1977 and maintains close ties with the business school, acting as an Entrepreneur-In-Residence since 2009.
In 2017, Steve was honoured with the Ivey Distinguished Service Award, an award for alumni who have provided extraordinary service to the Ivey Business School over an extended period of time.
Stephen Pearce: CFO
Stephen is an experienced finance professional, with expertise in investment fund management including public sector exposure.
Prior to joining BerQ RNG, Stephen spent 18 years as a Director at Scotia Managed Companies, an investment fund arm of The Bank of Nova Scotia. At Scotia Managed Companies, Stephen led a diverse team of finance professionals with assets under management reaching $2.3 billion at its height comprising 24 investment funds.
Prior to joining Scotia Managed Companies, Stephen spent 10 years in public accounting, auditing a wide range of companies including public, private & government entities followed by a five-year stint as a financial analyst offering financial and management support in a large medical practice.
Sarah Cathrae: Managing Director of Finance
Sarah has over 18 years' experience in commercial real estate over a wide variety of roles including property management, building operations, consulting, finance, and valuation and appraisal, and represents the third generation in her family to work in the development and management of seniors housing.
In addition to her role as Managing Director of BerQ RNG, Sarah is Managing Director of Suske Capital; Managing Director of Chancery Seniors Housing Investments Inc.; Asset Manager of Points West Living Limited Partnership; President of Points West Living GP Inc.; Vice President of Strategy and Analysis of Canoe Bay Developments Inc.; and was recently named to the Board of Directors of St. Joseph’s Villa Foundation, a not-for-profit that raises money for St. Joseph's Villa, one of the province's largest long term care homes with 390 beds owned by the St. Joseph’s Health System, Hamilton.
Sarah holds a Bachelor of Humanities Degree, Honours, from Carleton University and is currently pursuing a Diploma in Urban Land Economics at Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia.
Steve D. Suske: Vice President of Corporate Development
Steve is Vice President of Corporate Development at BerQ RNG, with over 14 years of experience specializing in information systems, information technology, and human resources.
Prior to joining BerQ RNG, Steve was Director, Information Systems at Chartwell Retirement Residences, where he implemented and managed advanced business systems to streamline property, G&A and capex budgeting, consolidated financial reporting and human capital management.
Steve holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Ryerson University.
Jimmy Suske: Analyst
Jimmy is an experienced analyst with a background in financial analysis, budgeting, accounting, and forecasting. He provides robust modelling and reporting to facilitate executive-level decision making.
Jimmy earned a business degree from the University of Western Ontario with a specialization in finance. While at university, Jimmy was involved with the Western Investment Club where he was tasked with researching an array of potential investments.
Prior to joining Suske Capital, Jimmy was part of a Junior Achievement club where he led a team that launched a small entrepreneurial business in Calgary, Alberta.
Sukanja Senthilkumar: Controller
Sukanja is an experienced finance professional, with expertise in investment fund management including public sector exposure.
Prior to joining BerQ RNG, Sukanja spent 17 years at Scotia Managed Companies, an investment fund arm of The Bank of Nova Scotia, with assets under management reaching $2.3 billion at its height comprising 24 investment funds. She held various positions including her most recent role as Senior Manager as head of the Tax group.
Katherine Wilson: Director of Marketing
Katherine Wilson is Director of Marketing and Communications at BerQ RNG, with over 12 years of experience in marketing and web communications. She has held a variety of roles including publicist, web content editor, and senior marketing associate.
Prior to joining BerQ RNG, Katherine was the web content advisor at Suncor Energy and the lead content specialist for their retail websites including petro-canada.ca and petro-points.ca.
Katherine has both an honours B.A. and a Certificate in Marketing from the University of Toronto.
